C-drama: 大宋提刑官 Dead Men Do Tell Tales (6/9/2006-8/25/2006)
Following Stained Glass, a Korean drama, 大宋提刑官 "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" aired last Friday night.
This was a hit show in China last year.
This is the Chinese version of Quincy. The story happened in Song Dynasty. It's about China's first "medical examiner" Song Tse. He was the first person to write a book(洗冤集錄 "Xi Yuan Ji Lu") about forensic medicine. This book was translated into German in 1908. Song Tse is part police detective, part death investigater, and part medical examiner.
This show has 52 episodes when it aired. It consists of a series of different cases, so I don't know if KSCI/LA18 will air all 52 episodes since it won't be difficult for him to edit some episodes out.
KSCI/LA18 has not updated its website yet, so I don't know the official English title of this show, but Yesasia sells this show:
http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-c/section-videos/pid-1004116727/
and my Replay TV also indicated that the program for that slot is called "Dead Men Do Tell Tales".
For those of you who can read Chinese, here is a little write-up about the show:
http://www.chinatv.com.tw/ctv_entertainment/entertainment_1/9409_1_01.php
After doing some search on Wikipedia, indeed, Song Tse is the father of forensic medicine. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forensic_medicine#History_of_forensics
"The first written account of using medicine and entomology to solve (separate) criminal cases is attributed to the book Xi Yuan Ji Lu (洗冤集錄, translated as "Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified"), written in 1248 China by Song Tse (宋慈, 1186-1249). In one of the accounts, the case of a person murdered with a sickle was solved by a death investigator who instructed everyone to bring their sickles to one location. Flies, attracted by the smell of blood, eventually gathered on a single sickle. In light of this, the murderer confessed. The book also offered advice on how to distinguish between a drowning (water in the lungs) and strangulation (broken neck cartilage)."

There are many American dramas which dealt with forensic medicine such as Quincy, Cold Case Files, CSI, Navy NCIS, Crossing Jordan, and not to mention tons of police/crime and hospital related dramas.
I don't agree that this drama copies other shows because it deals with the first well-known forensic scientist of the history of the world. Song Tse had to use primitive technology that he had available to him to solve his cases. We are talking about no DNA analysis nor microscopes. class blockquote meglovesya wrote:

I believe all the actors in this drama are from mainland China. I didn't see actors/actresses from Taiwan or Hong Kong.
There are lots of medical jargons in the dialogue, but I wouldn't say it's old Chinese. It's Mandarin and the dialogue is not very different from the dialogue used in other period-piece Chinese dramas, like those historical dramas that depict Emperors or the last drama, Dr. Song Lien-Shen.

Today's episode is #41. So there are 11 more episodes left. 2 more weeks to go.
