Re: Useful J-Drama Links

Wow, those NHK links are awesome! Thanks for posting those.

I was thrilled to see my favorite drama, A Son of the Good Earth, ranked #13, though of course I would have liked to see it at #1. But since it's not on top, then I'm glad Churasan is. Although I enjoyed it enough to watch once, I definitely would not rank Sakura #4, but oh well.

Is there anyone who can tell me where Sunflower, Suzuran, and Musashi ranked? I can only read a limited amount of characters, and I haven't been studying them lately, so I'm rusty.

I thought the age rankings were quite interesting. Apparently, I have very young and very old taste. Churasan was quite popular with the under-30 crowd, while A Son of the Good Earth was a big hit with the 50+ crowd (especially 70-somethings). emoticon

You know, I think there's a commemorative book for NHK's anniversary. I meant to look into it, but forgot about it. I'd like to get that if I could.

ひまわり (Sunflower) doesn't show up on the composite list at all, すずらん (Suzuran) is #65, and 宮本武蔵 (Miyamoto Musashi) is #46.

Re: Useful J-Drama Links

Wow, that’s a fascinating top-ten list! Might as well spout off a few ignorant comments about the ones I can manage to decipher (no, I can NOT read Japanese, but I can fake it pretty good):

#1. Churasan: Not my number one, but certainly somewhere in my top three. Lighthearted, fun, and not grimly serious like most NHK morning dramas. I’d happily watch it a second time.

#2. No idea whatsoever what that one is! But, it finished Number 2: is it really that good?

#3. Asuka: Huh? To show what an un-memorable daily drama that was, I had to check my videotape collection. Sure enough, I’d watched and recorded the entire series (8 cassettes total) but I flat couldn’t remember a thing about it! Turns out it’s a Honmamon lookalike: a young girl wants to become a master at creating Japanese confections. Her goal: to create the one unique confection that will leave her mark on the world (just like Konoha trying to come up with the one dish that’s uniquely hers). Same storyline as Honmamon, except that Honmamon told it better. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS ONE FINISHED IN THIRD PLACE.

#4. Sakura: I’d heard this was wildly popular in Japan for its “realistic” portrayal of Japanese-Americans . . . but that real-life Japanese-Americans in Hawaii thought Sakura was a bunch of nonsense! This one doesn’t deserve to be that high, either.

#5. Oshin: I never saw this one – it was from quite a few years ago, before I started watching J-dramas – but word has it that it was always considered some kind of masterpiece. I’d sure like to see this one rebroadcast!

#6. Ten Urara: The lead character in this one is a girl apprenticing as a carpenter, in the hopes of someday building traditional Japanese-style homes. I remember that the lead actress was way cute, but otherwise it was still just the standard old NHK morning drama formula of a girl-in-a-man’s world. Not bad, but nothing special.

#7. Futarikko (Twins): My favorite! So glad it made the top-ten, especially since it aired so many years ago. People remember quality! Yes, yes, NHK; please rebroadcast this one, too!

#8, #9: Don’t recognize these two. Can’t read most of the kanji anyway. emoticon

#10: Agri: Hiroshi’s favorite? Story of girl who strives to become “the best beautician in Japan.” Some terrific historical drama segments, but otherwise it’s the same old routine NHK morning drama formula. Good, but not spectacular; it’s probably worthy of its #10 ranking.

(edit: just a note: the English-language page about NHK morning dramas . . .

http://www.nhk.or.jp/digitalmuseum/nhk50years_en/categories/p50/index.html

. . . include photos of arguably the three greatest NHK morning dramas: Oshin, Futarikko (Twins), and Churasan. Having not seen Oshin, I can't comment, but I agree completely on their other two selections)!

Thanks ccwf!!

I want them to show Agri and Tengoku e no kaidan and even Younger Man again. I wonder what a chance Agri has for re-airing.
