Possible Magicbell Programming Changes
I've got pretty bad news. I gave Magicbell (which airs the KXLA Sunday drama at 7 PM) a call and asked them if they had decided which drama would air following Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan. They directed me to their website and said that starting April 6th, 2008 - the Sunday 7 PM drama would be discontinued. I went to check and sure enough - its true. Here's what it looks like they are going to do with Magicbell's Sunday programming for the next few weeks..
Sunday, March 16th - 7 PM - Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan Ep 9
Sunday, March 23rd - 7 PM - Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan Ep 10
Sunday, March 30th - 7 PM - Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan Ep 11 (Final)
Starting Sunday, April 6th, a new program called Cool Japan will air on Magicbell from 6:30 to 7:15. According to their website:
COOL JAPAN is a term that describes the growing international interest in Japan.
From the worlds of fashion, anime, architecture to cuisine, the cultural aspects of Japanese society that have long been left undiscovered are starting to make a strong impact on global trends.
The good news is that this will have English subtitles. From 7:15 to 7:30, instead of airing a drama, Magicbell will be moving the Light of Life program that currently airs before the drama from 6:45 to 7:00. Starting April 6th, it will air from 7:15 to 7:30.
So Magicbell's new schedule will look something like this:
6:30 - 7:15: Cool Japan
7:15 - 7:30: Light of Life
Now that Magicbell's Japanese Sunday drama has been canceled, this brings us down to just two Japanese dramas aired.
Here's Magicbell's website for more info: http://magicbell.tv/index-e.html I'll post up any updates or changes as soon as I find out about them.

Re: Possible Magicbell Programming Changes
I well agree. The warm feelings at the end a long week that I've been given by these fabulous family dramas cannot easily be replaced by the current bill-of-fare that is television. I've located so many jewels through d-addicts and like sites that I'll not go without quality entertainment, but I'll miss the convenience that the weekly series offers and feel for those whose options are limited.

Is Japan Wave dead in U.S.? Though its certainly not at its highest point, I still think that Japan Wave is going strong. I think the fact of the matter is like unlike the Korean Wave, where dramas rank up in popularity with K-pop music, with the Japan Wave - the popular elements have always been anime, J-pop, and technology. I don't think (until recently, at least) that dramas have been very popular. Even then, most fans of the dramas find them online rather than watch them on television.
I think its a shame though. More and more people would be exposed to the dramas if companies like UTB, Magicbell, but moreso Fuji TV - decided to air subtitled dramas for the people to see more of what Japanese dramas are about.
