posticon J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

Okay, so now it’s our turn for J-Drama fans Get-Togethers. I borrowed from NChristi’s opening post from the K-Drama thread since it explains it all. I also included the disclaimer regarding this website.

This topic is for any and all of our J-drama members and fans to plan, arrange, and discuss specific fan meetings and get-togethers.

The general guideline is that the specific event be clearly identified in your topic subject line in order to avoid confusion.

CJKDramas.com is limited to providing a discussion forum, is not a sponsor of such meetings, and does not endorse or accept responsibility for any activities or consequences of any fan meetings or events.

DISCUSSION - Re: J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

Hi, J-Drama Fans!!

I’ve thought about this almost a year ago, but life got in the way.

Its about time we J-Drama fans have a Get-Together! Some of us are double drama fans (as in K-Dramas, too), but, hey, twice the fun.

For our first time, I thought something more quiet would give us a better opportunity to get to know each other. After that, we can think of meeting up at Festivals from time to time... and of course other fun places.

There is a Japanese Gardens (run by the City of Los Angeles) off the 405+101, just a little north of Sherman Oaks (Van Nuys). Open Sunday, closed Saturday. Tours are only during the week, but maybe we can work something out. And, there is a Gift Shop!

Here is their website (they seem to have two). The Garden is 6-1/2 acres…. I'd like to send them an e-mail explaining who we are and why we would like to make our First Get-Together there, and see if its possible to have a “group drink break” around 11:30 and then later a brown-bag lunch around 2 – both somewhere on the grounds, if not, then we’ll have to meet in the parking lot. I’ll find out if they have picnic tables.

http://www.thejapanesegarden.com/Garden/Pages/garden.htm

It will be a lot of walking, so don’t know if people will have the energy for a full meal afterwards that’s why I thought of the Brown-Bag-It.

If full meal is preferred… my thoughts for eating is a Japanese BBQ in Sherman Oakes (SF Valley) off the 405 and 101 – OR – in honor of TEMP, in North Hollywood is a new Spanish Topas (sp) restaurant (close to 101, 134, + 170 freeways). I still need to check both places to see if they have small private rooms and Sunday hours.

DISCUSSION - Re: J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

Sorry, forgot to add -

Any other suggestions???

For where ever the place, we need to think about at least picking a month (a specific date can be set after that). Don't forget we need enough time for a "meeting" to make final arrangements for the Get-Together.

Since we are in the planning/discussion stage, please keep DISCUSSION in the subject line. Then, we can change it to "MEETING" and then "EVENT".

DISCUSSION - Re: J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

CantGetEnough, thanks for coming up with the great idea! I know, we haven't had a chance to have a get-together or fan meet-up yet, so it'll be a fun opportunity to get to know everybody! emoticon

I think I know which Japanese Garden you're talking about -- is it the one off of Woodley near the Sepulveda Dam? I've been there once a while ago, it was a really beautiful and relaxing place! You're right, it would be a good idea to send an e-mail in advance to the place we end up deciding on since its going to be a group of people.

Does anybody else have any suggestions? Maybe if we all say whereabouts we're going to be traveling from, so it'll help us make sure we're deciding on a central location. I'm coming from Northridge (the north part of the San Fernando Valley).

Looking forward to the get-together, should be a lot of fun!! emoticon

Re: J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

OKAY - another suggestion -

There is a new Japanese exhibition on display thru September 14 at the Japanese Pavilion at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art).

The Age of Imagination: Japanese Art, 1615–1868, from the Price Collection

June 22, 2008–September 14, 2008 | Pavilion for Japanese Art and Hammer Building

The Etsuko and Joe Price Collection is world-renowned for its collection of Japanese paintings of the Edo Period (1615–1868) featuring screens, hanging scrolls, and fan-format paintings. The Price Collection reflects the eclectic diversity of a remarkably creative span in Japan's history of visual art and is highlighted by some of the finest examples of the distinctive and compelling renderings of animal life by Ito Jakuchu (1716–1800), an artist who caught Joe Price’s eye five decades ago, when the artist was fairly unknown. The collection also features Kansai-region artists such as Maruyama Okyo, Nagasawa Rosetsu, and Mori Sosen, and artists of the Edo Rimpa school including Sakai Hoitsu and Suzuki Kiitsu. The exhibition has been on a four-city tour in Japan with enormous success; it was the highest-attended exhibition in the world in 2006.

Re: J-Dramas Fan Get-Togethers

Thanks for the info about the exhibition, CantGetEnough! I think I've seen banners for the Japanese Art exhibition at the LACMA on major streets -- I think it was on Wilshire Blvd? But the Japanese Pavilion and the park at LACMA are really beautiful -- even though they're in the middle of the city, its pretty calming.

We could also always meet up at an Obon festival! Bubu13 posted up a list of Obon festivals being held in and around the Los Angeles area in the Events topic. The post with the list of Obon locations is towards the end of the page.

We'll be attending most of the Obons on Sunday. Next up for us is Venice on 7/20.

Obon Season is the best! I'm thinking of attending the Gardena Obon at the beginning of August. I've only been to one Obon before -- it was last year's Little Tokyo Obon. A lot of fun!

By the way, CantGetEnough -- I was riding the bus on Ventura Blvd (in Studio City) today while going to work, and I noticed the banners for the LACMA Japanese Art exhibit! I guess I was confusing Wilshire Bl with Ventura Bl (I remember seeing them on a major street, I just forgot which one -- LOL!) emoticon

Hiroshi66, hope you'll be able to make the Gardena one. That one is a must on our list. Got to meet a "boarder" at thelast one. Also doing Nisei Week. Last year we did every Saturday and Sunday but this year the son has a Saturday class that lasts ALL DAY...

Try to get there early... you'll have to park on the street, and expect to walk a couple of blocks... if you're lucky.
