Mindless Games (Suggestions?)

I am in desperate (there goes another female superlative) need of some truly mindless games. I used to like jigsaw puzzles but, with a fur person of the kitty persuasion around, a table with loose puzzle pieces becomes an irresistable field of prey! (What I like about j-puzzles is the tactile setting in order, the removing of chaos--somehow this decompresses my mind.)

Any suggestions out there? Of course I still run the risk of cat on top of monitor, hanging tail directly in middle of screen, or the other cat routine of plopping herself down between the keyboard and the screen, obscuring half of it while she looks at me and smiles. Come to think of it, even that's not as bad as writing with fountain pens (love a good pen), while she ever so intently watches the ink flow onto the paper, attempting to paw at those mysterious black things issuing from the nib.

Thx for any suggestions. emoticon

I have the same problem with my cat. Try this on-line jigsaw puzzle or the others at that site. There are options to change the number and shapes of the puzzle pieces.

Wow. This is too cool! You know what I love about the design? It's the snapping sound at the correct fit. It's just about as pleasing sensorarily (is that a word?) as actually touching and fitting together physical puzzle pieces.

I love this! (Even if the first one is TiVo! Only kidding. It's probably just brain envy on my part toward all you TiVo guys, the frustration of having just enough smarts to know I don’t. emoticon Oh, well. Akesato is a heavy counterbalance, though frequently unrecognized–which makes it all the better.)

Time to check out. It’s cold and raining–for Southern California this is great! (Unless you’re a poor soul having to commute home tonight.) Plus Firecat (survived a terrible fire couple years back–smoke in lungs and all foot pads burned off–which amazingly grew back) is hungry and blocking the entire monitor screen. This means URGENT. See ya!

Are we talking here about mind-less/time-waster games, gee I always thought that was the whole point of the inter-net? I kidd. Now I remember when I was a kid we these things called books and magazines, you carried them around and they made fine felis swatters. Of course if the felis was over 80 pounds it became more of an interesting contest over who fed first.
But as for games that are felis proof I highly recommend solitaire and Mahjong hand-held games. And if you got, they can be downloaded onto a PDA. Those don't have the oh-so cute sound-effects that I enjoy to annoy others and my Lab with.

LOL - I like this topic. For some reason puzzles were never seen as a "game" for me. They aren't really. They help connect a child's coordination, and especially for toddlers, help them learn how to put things together and how to take them out again. =)

Thanks for the SUGGESTION, Hiroshi! emoticon Well, I really didn't want to tell anybody this but I'm just now learning how to put things together and take them out again, while I toddle around the room. emoticon [TomCat, loan me that flyswatter.... WHAAAP!]

Game: An activity engaged in for amusement. Mindless: Simple and repetitive. (At least I got HALF of it right. emoticon )

To further elucidate, puzzles (strangely found in the "games" section of many retail stores) serve a distinct function for me that reading in itself does not. When I am literally weary of thinking, I find relief and restoration (an actual reversal of mind weariness) in switching to my intuitive side, using as many senses as I can. In soothing quietness (ergo, a soft, purring cat alongside), I like touching the pieces, fitting them together, seeing something take shape and come into order--sometimes just walking by and taking the time to find and fit only one or two pieces. At those times, I don't want more information, nor to compete for a score, or to hear electronic gaming noises, or to get sore thumbs.

The quickest (and shortest) fix with the biggest payoff (which I have used many a time in meetings where I can't bear to hear one more useless word and my eyes are juuust about to cross), is to begin writing backwards, then upside down and backwards, then repeating using the other hand. The only way I can describe the literal sensation is that it's like my brain itself went out for a walk in a brewing thunder storm (brisk, cool wind, few raindrops here and there--very refreshing to me). After just a minute or two of such writing, I can take on the world again.

Contrary to wasting time, I see puzzles and probably some other "games" out there as a productive use of my time when I need them.

Indeed, nchristi. emoticon

I too disagree the game like role puzzles play in our modern society. Puzzles are just as educational as books. Some of them are more educational than some books. Its really bad to neglect them and its great to make your brain exercise by doing them.
